Nah… Just the skull believed to be his. After a forensic study, scientists at the University of Connecticut revealed that the piece of skull with a bullet hole through it that Russian officials claimed belonged to Adolf Hitler actually belonged to an unidentified woman.
The section of bone which was marked with a bullet hole was used to support the theory that Hitler shot himself and took cyanide in his Berlin bunker as Soviet troops approached in April 1945. Russian scientists said that cranium fragment was found next to Hitler’s jawbone. It was preserved as part of a collection of Hitler artifacts by Soviet intelligence and went on display for the first time at Moscow’s Federal Archive in 2000.
But now, Linda Strausbaugh, a professor of molecular and cell biology, and Nick Bellantoni, archaeologist who traveled to Moscow to take a sample, exposed the infamous Hitler skull belonged to a woman probably aged between 20 and 40 years old.
Nick Bellantoni said he had suspected even before the bone was tested that the fragment do not belong to an adult male.
“The bone was very small and thin, and normally male bones are much more robust in our species,” he said. “I thought it probably came from a woman or a younger man.”
DNA tests confirmed that the bone fragment came from a female.
The piece of skull forms part of a collection that also includes a section of a bloodstained sofa where Hitler is believed to have shot himself after swallowing a cyanide pill.
The test only revealed that the bone did not belong to him though but doesn’t reveal how Hitler died.
Both Strausbaugh and Bellantoni said there is nothing in their findings proves that Hitler died in the bunker. Doubts about exactly how Hitler died have persisted for decades.
“My gut feeling is he did commit suicide there, and maybe the blood sample we found is his,” Bellantoni said.
“What this does is it raises a question: If this is not him who is it?” he later added. “And, two, what really happened there?”
