After his ninth try, Andre “The Hawk” Dawson has been elected to the Hall of Fame when voting results were announced Wednesday. Clearly shows how difficult it is to make it into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown. Most anticipated that candidate Roberto Alomar was the candidate get the call but he and Bert Blyleven fell short.
“It was well worth the wait. I can’t really describe the elation,” said Andre Dawson. “If you’re a Hall of Famer, eventually you’re going to get in, no matter how long it takes.”
Dawson received 420 of 539 votes by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, which amounts to a 77.9 percent share. The required mark for induction is 75 percent. He is one of only three players to hit 400 home runs (438 total) and steal 300 bases (314).
Dawson is an eight-time All Star, eight-time Gold Glove winner, four-time Silver Slugger Award winner, the 1987 National League MVP and 1977 MLB National League Rookie of the Year. Upon his retirement, he earned 2,774 hits and a batted an average of .279.
