R&B singer and songwriter Beyonce Knowles has postponed a planned concert in Malaysia after the nation’s opposition Islamist conservatives raised concerns about her performance, citing moral issues, the event’s organizers said Monday.
This has already happened before. In 2007, the youth wing of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) forced Beyonce to cancel her concert. Most people in Malaysia are Muslims and they think the show would be immoral, since Beyonce is well-known for her sexy choreography and seductive outfits.
Beyonce is supposed to perform at a Kuala Lumpur stadium on Oct. 25. Malaysian entertainment company Marctensia said in a statement that the show “has been postponed to a future date to be announced shortly”, probably later this week.
“The postponement is solely (the) decision of the artist and has nothing to do with other external reasons,” the concert organizers said in the statement.
And a post on Beyonce’s official site says:
The “I AM…” tour stop in Malaysia, originally scheduled for October 25, 2009 by Beyoncé, has been postponed indefinitely. The entertainer remains respectful of the people and cultures of all nations and holds the fans of Malaysia in highest regards.
The youth wing of PAS sought last year to prevent singers Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani from performing in Malaysia. The country has strict regulations about the performer’s clothes and both singers wore clothes that revealed little skin.
Earlier this month, Malaysia initially banned Muslims from attending a concert by U.S. hip-hop band Black Eyed Peas, which was sponsored by Guinness, one of the brands owned by the world’s biggest spirits group, Diageo. The ban was later reversed, but a senior official said it was up to each individual’s “better judgment” whether to attend the event.
Some entertainment industry officials say that because of these strict regulations and frequent controversies, many international artists are discouraged from visiting Malaysia.
