‘Balloon Boy’ Falcon Heene Found Alive Hiding At Home

The family of a 6-year-old boy who set off a nationally televised scramble when he was thought to be in a balloon over Colorado.

The Falcon Heene feared to have floated away in a home-made hot air balloon in Colorado had been discovered hiding in a box in the attic of a garage at his family home on Thursday has been found alive, Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden said.

He told reporters the massive search for the youngster began after one of his brothers said they saw him climb in the balloon but fortunately had never taken to the air.

Falcon, the son of Richard and Mayumi Heene of Fort Collins, Colo., was found hiding in a cardboard box in his garage attic. Television viewers knew Falcon’s family from “Wife Swap,” where they last appeared in March after fans of the show voted to have them featured again in its 100th episode.

Fox News Channel, CNN and others stations nationally stuck with the story throughout the afternoon and well into the evening.

“It’s got everybody freaked out,” said Fox News Channel’s Shepard Smith, “and why wouldn’t it?”

Investigators searched the balloon’s path and speculate how far the balloon might travel, and whether authorities could do anything to bring it down. When the balloon finally landed, authorities approached and found the boy wasn’t in it.

But in the end, the boy apparently never left the home and he was found hiding in the Heene’s attic.

Reader’s Digest to File for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

It’s quite unbelievable but The Reader’s Digest, country’s most popular general interest magazine, said on Monday, July 17th, that it is planning to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization for their U.S. operations.

According to The Walll Street Journal, The Reader’s Digest Association Inc. said it reached an agreement with its lenders on a restructuring plan that it will likely complete under a prepackaged bankruptcy filing in order to reduce its debt.

Reader’s Digest magazine that is issued every month was founded by Lila Bell Wallace and DeWitt Wallace, and based in Pleasantville, New York in 1922. According to the Audit Bureau of Circulation, Reader’s Digest is the best-selling consumer magazine in the USA, with a circulation of over 5.5 million copies in the United States, and a readership of 38 million as measured by Mediamark Research (MRI). Now it has with 50 editions in 21 language in more than 70 countries around the world.

So how come a company that reaches more readers with household incomes of $100,000+ than Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, Business Week and Inc. combined plans to file for a bankruptcy protection? It seems like debt and the recession creeps over these giants as well.

“Restructuring our debt will enable us to have the financial flexibility to move ahead with our growth and transformational initiatives,” president and chief executive Mary Berner said in a statement.

The bankruptcy would apply only to Readers Digest U.S. holdings. Operations in other countries like Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand would be not be affected. It seems like Reader’s Digest was affected too much by its debt. The bankruptcy plan, which has been accepted by creditors, allows it to cut debt from $2.2 billion to $550 million.

With the current economic crisis, most businesses are having a tough time. Take example what happened to Tribune, Vibe and The Seattle Post-Intelligencer. But it is highly unlikely for an established company like Reader’s Digest to just disappear immediately.

Fox and AT&T’s Statement to American Idol Voting Controversy

There were rumors and accusations that Kris Allen won the “American Idol 2009″ contest due to the “Power” phones provided by AT&T to some voters. But to a statement that AT&T released “it’s quite a leap to suggest that a few individuals could have impacted the final results.” It is said that Kris Allen’s votes were based on unfair count but Fox management and the producers of “American Idol” insisted that the results of this competition are fair, accurate and verified. No foul play as the statement of FremantleMedia North America, 19Entertainment and Fox Broadcasting Company is read.

This were responses to the news dissipated by The New York Times that points out a possible flaw in the Voting process, that two parties were help in Arkansas shortly after the final performance and that AT&T representatives assisted Kris’ supporters on a new feature of their product that is called Power Texting. It allows multiple messages to be sent in just one push on your phone. The company, AT&T, in defense said that the product was only in demo stage as of now and only 80 phones are currently in action for business purposes only, it was not used for the sake of the said competition.

Fox affirmed that Kris is the true winner of the “American Idol 2009″ contest. A third, independent party, was monitoring all the procedures and backed up the integrity of the voting process. There was no way that any individual could have altered or influenced the outcome of the competition.

Seven-time NBA Detroit Piston’s All-Star David Bing was elected as Mayor of Detroit, Michigan last March 5, 2009. He replaced the controversial Kwame Kilpatrick who has numerous allegations of marital infidelity, conspiracy, perjury, murder, and the only mayor in Detroit to be charged with felony while still in the office. Kilpatrick was found guilty of obstructing of justice after it was uncovered that he and his chief of staff covered up an affair to illegally discipline police officers. Bing will serve the office until the end of the year until a new vote is held to decide who leads Detroit for the next four years.

Dave Bing won by a landslide against Ken Cockrel Jr. With all but two of 629 precincts reporting, Bing had 52.3 percent of the vote, or 48,951 votes, to 47.7 percent, or 44,703 votes, for Ken Cockrel Jr. Cockrel’s father became the temporary mayor after Kilpatrick’s resignation last September 4, 2008.

“The real work starts now,” Bing said to loud cheers during his victory speech.

“What we will bring … is efficiency, transparency, honesty and integrity back to the mayor’s office,” he said.

This former NBA star was named as one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players of all time. Now that he is serving a government office, we sure do hope that he’ll mend Detroit and be one of the greatest mayors of the city.

Nurses Appreciation Week

We are going to celebrate the National Nurses Week starting May 6 until May 12. In Canada, they will celebrate in on May 11 to 17. It is one way of showing our appreciation to thousands of nurses with their outstanding dedication, caring to patients and excellent practice.

We’ve been celebrating the National Recognition Day for Nurses yearly on May 6 since it was assigned by President Ronald Reagan in 1982. It was designated by the American Nurse’s Association from May 6 through May 12 several years later and a permanent observance of Nurse’s Week.

Nurses care for our sick and elderly. Somehow, they have touched our lives. We can be at least be nice to them and appreciate what they are doing.

The National Take Your Child To Work Day

On April 23, 2009, we celebrate the national Take Your Child To Work Day. This is to introduce your children to the real world and open up their eyes to the difference between a workplace and their life at school. This will help them discover what they want to be in the future and give them confidence to a career possibility.

In Los Angeles, children of the Probation Department employees had a tour last April 21st in Los Angeles Police Department. They had the pleasure of looking at the 911 Communications Center in that area. It was explained when to use the emergency number and when not to. This would be the first time that the Los Angeles Police Department had an inside tour in observance of the Take Your Child To Work Day.
