The UFC 103 in Dallas, Texas between Chuck Liddell and Rich Franklin is more likely impossible after Liddell told Sports Illustrated that he won’t be fighting against Franklin.
As a matter of fact, the former UFC light heavyweight champion is taking a year off and doesn’t consider fighting anyone until April 2010.
At the UFC 97: Redemption last April 18 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell was defeated by Mauricio “Shogun: Rua in the first round by TKO. That was Liddell’s second knock-out in a row and the third in his five fights.
After that loss, UFC President Dana White announced that Liddell is retired from fighting. White said,
“I care about him. I care about his health, and it’s over, man. It’s over. At the end of the day, I care about these guys. I don’t want to see anybody stick around too long. You’re never going to see Chuck Liddell on the canvas again.”
Liddell is 39 years old and if he’ll decide to pursue his fighting career next year, that’ll make him 40 already. While White was firm on his decision that Liddell should give it up, Liddell said:
“I’m planning on sitting out for at least a year or so, just to let my head rest. I haven’t personally made a decision one way or the other. Hopefully my brain can heal over time. The shot last fight is something that normally wouldn’t hurt me. I think I need at least some time off from getting hit. I’m going to take time off sparring then. I’ll train still. Still gonna roll. I’ll probably do a little more jiu-jitsu than normal because I like it. It’s fun.”
