Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber filed court documents accusing German Edis Kayalar, a friend of their former nanny, of trying to extort $100,000 for a photo of the couple’s little 7-year-old daughter, Kaia. And unless they gave him the money, Kayalar had threatened to distribute the photograph to media.
Kaia told her parents that the nanny took the photo as part of a “cops and robbers” game where she was bound to a chair and gagged. Annett Wolf, a rep for the former supermodel, issued a statement saying the photo was taken without Crawford’s knowledge.
In the filed criminal complaint on Thursday, Edis Kayalar is charged with one count of extortion, which carries a maximum sentence of two years, according to Thom Mrozek, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. TMZ was able to obtain pictures of Kayala.
Kayalar first asked Crawford and Gerber for an unspecified amount of money, saying he was broke and that he could get a lot of money by selling the photo to the tabloids. Gerber took the photo and gave Kayalar $1,000 in cash “for his trouble,” the affidavit stated.
When Kayalar called again demanding more money, saying he had another copy of the photograph, sheriff’s officials contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement and determined that Kayalar was in the United States illegally. He was arrested and deported in September but continued his threats from Germany, this time asking for $100,000.
In a released statement, Wolf said, “Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford intend to pursue any and all available legal action against anyone who aids the perpetrator in the distribution or sale of the photograph of their daughter.”
