Johnny Got His Gun is a 1971 anti-war film based on the novel written and also directed by Dalton Trumbo.

It follows a story of Joe Bonham, played by Timothy Bottoms, who was greatly injured by a mortar during the last day of World War I. If you’re wondering why Johnny, during that time, Johnny is a slang used for an American soldier. Joe woke up in the hospital and he saw that he had lost his arms, legs and his face was all disfigured as well rendering him unable to speak, see and hear. However, his is very well conscious of what’s happening around him and his mind works very well. He tried ending his own life by suffocating himself but he can’t control the Tracheotomy that as given to him.

His only escape is when he searched into his mind and recalled some of his old memories and where he created a world of his own. He remembered his own life with his family and the love of his life Kareen, played by Kathy Fields. And somehow, a young nurse who took care of him was aware of dilemma and it started the connection between them.

Just like in the novel, Joe tried to communicate to his doctors through Morse Code by banging his head on his pillow. He wished for the army to put him in a glass tube, tour around the country to show the people the effect true consequence of war. His request was never granted though. The nurse attempted to end his suffering by removing his breathing tube but one of her supervisor was able to stop her.

Johnny Got His Gun is one of the GOOD classic movies. It’s not just drama but its story as well. It’ll definitely make you think. A story about reality and fantasy. A story about was and peace. The movie 1971 won the Grand Prix Spécial du Jury and the FIPRESCI Prize in Cannes Film Festival.
