And he lives on… TeamXbox reported that Kurt Cobain, the legendary lead singer of Nirvana, will appear as a playable avatar in the upcoming Guitar Hero 5.

Guitar Hero 5 is the fifth music video game in the Guitar Hero series where players play a four-person band experience, including lead and bass guitar, drums, and vocals. Players now have the option to customize the make-up of their band with any instrument combination possible. The game contains 83 different artists with 85 songs and with Cobain as one of the characters, gamers can now sing and play the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit” from their album Nevermind (the song that made them popular in 1991). Other musicians in the game include Johnny Cash, Carlos Santana, Shirley Manson, and Matthew Bellamy.

Tim Riley, Vice President of Music Affairs for Activision said in a press release,

“Kurt Cobain is one of the most recognizable frontmen in rock ‘n’ roll history and it’s an honor to have two of Nirvana’s masterpieces included in Guitar Hero 5. This is the first time the original recording of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ has ever been licensed in an entertainment property and we’re thrilled to offer Guitar Hero fans exclusive access to the unreleased live version of ‘Lithium.’”

Guitar Hero 5 will be released internationally on September 2009 on PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360 platforms. Check out the trailer.
