You Never Know! Anything Goes!

Larry Langford, a former mayor of Birmingham, Alabama and a former president of the Jefferson County Commission, has been found guilty by the jury on all 60 accounts in his federal bribery trial.

Langford was investigated by the SEC on corruption charges in 2007. In 2008 a lawsuit was filed against him for illegally accepting about $236,000 in cash and benefits from Montgomery investment banker Bill Blount and lobbyist Al LaPierre while still serving as president of the Jefferson County Commission. In exchange, he funneled $7.1 million in bond business to a prominent investment banker. On December 1, 2008, Langford was arrested by the FBI on a 101-count indictment alleging conspiracy, bribery, fraud, money laundering, and filing false tax returns in connection with a long-running bribery scheme.

When the jury returned after three hours after beginning deliberations Wednesday afternoon, they found Langford guilty on all counts against him, ranging from bribery to money laundering during his tenure as president of the Jefferson County Commission.

Langford, 63, managed to keep a poker face when the verdict was read. “We all got our trials in life and this, too, will pass,” he said before leaving the courtroom.

The judge said Langford would be sentenced within 90 to 100 days, meaning Langford would be allowed to stay out of prison while waiting for his sentence.

With the felony conviction, he was automatically removed from the office that he won in a landslide in 2007 and will be succeeded by Birmingham City Council President Carole Smitherman.
