He was given a second chance and he did not waste it. Because of a Saskatchewan penalty, Damon Duval kicked a 33-yard field goal with no time left, in the Grey Cup to give the Montreal Alouettes a 28-27 comeback victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the CFL championship Sunday night.

“Thank the man upstairs that we got second chance and allowed me to go out and do my job,” Damon Duval said. “We started off a little rough and we’re sitting here with green all around, but we stuck together.

“At halftime, we said ‘we’re still in it. Let’s keep going. We have a chance.’ And luckily, I got an opportunity a second time and put it through.”

The Roughriders were already winning with 16-point lead. Duval missed moments earlier from 43 yards, but the Roughriders were penalized for having 13 men on the field. The Alouettes eliminated the 16-point deficit in the final 10 minutes with touchdowns by Avon Cobourne, a 3-yard run with 7:05 left, and Ben Cahoon. Anthony Calvillo completed a 2-point conversion pass to Kerry Carter to make it 27-19 plus Duval’s boot with no time left on the clock.

In the end, Montreal Alouettes defeat the Saskatchewan Roughriders in a 28-27 score and win the 97th Grey Cup title. The game MVP was awarded to Avon Cobourne. The most valuable Canadian award was awarded to Ben Cahoon.

“We came back and the guys fought and what a joyful event,” Calvillo said. “It’s a huge relief for me. We always wanted another chance to come back and compete for a championship and win, and we finally pulled it off. So amazing.”

It was an amazing game indeed and a well-deserved victory for the Alouettes.
