The Moulin Rouge hotel and casino burst into flames around 11:30am on May 6, 2009. There were no reported injuries since the two-storey wing was vacant. The authorities are planning on bulldozing the entire structure after they put out the fire. More than 100 firefighters stopped the flames from spreading to other building structures around.
The Moulin Rouge is located in West Las Vegas, Nevada and opened on May 24, 1955 and it is listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places. The hotel was the first integrated hotel and casino during that time. It was very popular with their black entertainers and would entertain at the other hotels and casinos and stay at the Moulin Rouge.
City spokeswoman said that a project had started last week to refurbish the property and the building’s distinctive script marquee was moved for safekeeping just days ago. The estate was purchased by the Moulin Rouge Development Corp. in 2004 for $12.1 million.
The Moulin Rouge passed under different owners and management but it still remained closed.
