Republican Scott Brown has won the Massachusetts Senate race held on January 19, 2010. With 83 percent of the precincts reporting, Scott Brown defeated Democrat Martha Coakley with a 52% to 47% victory in the special election to fill the remaining three years of the U.S. Senate term vacated by the death of Ted Kennedy, while Independent Joe Kennedy had one percent.

At 9:15pm, Ayla Brown, one of 24 semi-finalists of the fifth season of American Idol and the daughter of the senator-elect, was on stage singing and was the first to tell the crowd the news. “Martha Coakley has just conceded the race,” she said. “My dad is the next Senator from Massachusetts!”

“The people of Massachusetts have spoken. We welcome Scott Brown to the Senate and will move to seat him as soon as the proper paperwork has been received,” said Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Brown will become the 41st Republican in the 100-member Senate, and could allow the GOP to block the president’s priorities with filibusters.

“I have no interest in sugarcoating what happened in Massachusetts,” said Sen. Robert Menendez, the head of the Senate Democrats’ campaign committee. “There is a lot of anxiety in the country right now. Americans are understandably impatient.”
