“Bah! Humbug!” Ebenezer Scrooge’s response to his nephew’s “Merry Christmas!” greeting. It has been many years since we read that coming from English author Charles Dickens (7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870) from his story about a grumpy man and his indifference towards celebrating Christmas. Some of us are like Ebenezer in several ways, ignoring the spirit of Christmas during its season. Most likely, the reasons are that we are too busy with work, we see Christmas as a mediocre thing to celebrate or we just plain don’t like to celebrate it.

Christmas is actually fun if celebrated without the cliché that the media shows it as it is nowadays. It’s a solemn occasion and also spiritual in some sense (birth of Christ the messiah). It can also just be one of those reasons that families can get together and give happiness to each and everyone they love. Giving out gifts is just an option and not a requirement. The best we can offer during this season is our ability to give our love, our precious time and our genuine expression of kindness to all we meet.

This holiday season, why not go out of your way and try to make it different as we’ve been last year. Don’t be a Scrooge that hoards in gold other than giving out kindheartedness. Be a beacon of light that knows how to share and you will receive in return unrequited love that is most important, more than anything material you can obtain in this world.
