You Never Know! Anything Goes!

It has been 80 years since the last publication of Winnie-the-Pooh book collection. On October 5, 2009, the first authorized sequel to British children’s favourite literature classic by A.A. Milne and illustration by E.H. Shepard will go on sale. The new book, Return to the Hundred Acre Wood, is written by author David Benedictus and it will be the first book since 1928’s The House at Pooh Corner.

David Benedictus and illustrator Mark Burgess, who has also brought classic children’s character Paddington Bear to life, have written a new volume of 10 adventurous stories which is published by Egmont Monday. The old gang Tigger, Piglet and Eeyore is still with our Pooh Bear and a new character will be introduced – Lottie the Otter. In the book, Lottie swims in Christopher Robin’s bath, helps to set up an academy, and turns out to be good at cricket.

“Lottie has her own very definite ideas about how things should be done. She believes that one must always follow the correct etiquette,” said Benedictus, adding that she embodies Pooh’s values of “friendship and adventure.”

Milne named the character Winnie-the-Pooh after a teddy bear owned by his son, Christopher Robin Milne, and also included the boy himself in the story as the character Christopher Robin.

The tales unfold in Hundred Acre Wood, supposedly inspired by a forest near Milne’s home in East Sussex, southern England. The characters have also featured in Disney cartoons and a wide range of spin-off merchandising for children.

Trustees of the Pooh Properties approved the publication of the Hundred Acre Wood. Chairman Michael Brown said: “Milne’s stories may have been written in 1920s England but they are set in the enchanting world of a child’s imagination.

“David’s new stories, including the new character, arise naturally out of that world and so, like the original stories, are timeless.”

Do you think children will accept Benedictus’ Pooh stories as much as they embraced Milne’s? Is adding a new character a good idea? Share your thoughts here.
