Yankees take Game 2 of the World Series over Phillies, 3-1
The New York Yankees even up the score during Game 2 with 3-1 win over Philadelphia Phillies Thursday. The Yankees now tied the World Series with the Phillies at 1-1.
The Yankees bounced back with Teixeira and Matsui hit solo homers off old nemesis Pedro Martinez. Pitcher A.J. Burnett did his part with seven remarkable innings. The Yankees had a plan and that is to win Thursday’s game.
“We feel,” leftfielder Johnny Damon said pregame, “like we must win this one.”
“Every game in the World Series is a must win,” Teixeira said. “After yesterday, getting a win today was big.”
And they sure did.
After Cliff Lee’s notable pitching that earned the Phillies the Game 1, the Yankees’ resolve was to take the next game. They got home runs from Mark Teixeira, who homered off Martinez in the fourth to tie the score 1-1, and Hideki Matsui, who homered in the sixth to give the Yankees their first lead. An added insurance was from catcher Jorge Posada in the bottom of the seventh on a run-scoring single. The team also got seven strong innings from Burnett, who looked headed for a short night after needing 61 pitches to get through the first three innings.
After a day off, Game 3 will be at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday. Yankees or Phillies? Who will take the next one?
